Lakewood Ranch on Florida’s West Coast Developing 36-Acre Urban Entertainment Hub
Waterside Place to House 70,000-Square-Foot Performing Arts Center and
New Retail, Dining, Office and Residential
LAKEWOOD RANCH, FLA. (February 4, 2019) – Lakewood Ranch, the nation’s second best-selling master-planned community, is transforming West Florida’s entertainment and culture scene with its new 36-acre Waterside Place under construction in Sarasota County.
Set to debut in 2020, Waterside Place blends lifestyle and the arts with 120,000 square feet of unique in-line and freestanding commercial, retail and office space; diverse dining options; an eight-acre park; and miles of nature trails. In addition, more than 800 urban-style apartments and townhomes are being built within Waterside Place and over 4,000 homes will be connected via trails and water taxis.
Founded in 1994, Lakewood Ranch spans more than 31,000 acres and includes more than 36,000 residents in over 20 villages. Now celebrating its 25-year anniversary, The Ranch was recently recognized as the second best-selling master-planned community in the country by RCLCO, an independent real estate consulting firm, and is currently ranked the top multi-generational master-planned community.
A major cultural offering at Waterside Place will be The Players Centre for the Performing Arts. The iconic local theater company is moving from its 80-year home in downtown Sarasota to an expanded, 70,000 square-foot performing arts center at Waterside Place. Additionally, Waterside Place recently announced its first retail tenants: Foundation Coffee Co., The Yoga Shack, SoFresh, and Kilwins.
“Waterside Place will be an exceptional regional destination that will draw residents and visitors to shop, dine, relax and experience state-of-the-art entertainment, all while being surrounded by stunning lakefront views,” said Kirk Boylston, president of LWR Commercial. “We have spent nearly two years planning and designing this town center to ensure it will be a vibrant and dynamic contribution to our community’s lifestyle.”
Boylston added that Waterside Place tenanting is clearly focused on filling a significant gap in the Sarasota/Bradenton region. For some time, many area residents have headed to Tampa/St. Petersburg for an evening out on the town.
“We’re going to provide an array of dining, nightlife and entertainment options right here in their backyard, eliminating the need for that extended drive time,” he said.
Situated on a 36-acre peninsula overlooking the mile-wide Kingfisher Lake, Waterside Place includes numerous unique communal parks and “pop-out” spaces, which will encourage gathering and interaction among visitors and businesses. The town center will further activate the dynamic area by hosting festivals, farmers’ markets, and more.
Boylston said boutiques, specialty and experiential retail shops, restaurants, spas and neighborhood-oriented professional services are among the businesses being selected to join the urban entertainment hub, which features modern coastal architecture, offices with balconies and water views, and paseos that lead to ample parking.
“We will continue to be thoughtful and highly selective as we add additional retailers to Waterside Place,” Boylston said. “We look forward to working with tenants that are best in class in their category or that offer a unique but proven concept.”
He added that Waterside Place’s first announced tenants represent the types of brands being targeted for the destination. They include:
Foundation Coffee Co. is a specialty coffee shop that will feature a unique, bodega-style buildout with a walk-up bar and outdoor seating near a pedestrian bridge, making it a picture-perfect spot for morning gatherings.
Founded in 2013 by Courtenay Smith and Nikka Colorada, The Yoga Shack is a 1,600 square-foot studio that will offer yogis picturesque water views from its second-story space. Yoga enthusiasts will also be able to participate in outdoor group classes at the village’s eight-acre park.
SoFresh is a fast-casual restaurant offering made-to-order bowls, salads and wraps. Founded in Tampa, the Lakewood Ranch location will be the company’s eighth eatery throughout Florida.
Since 1947, Kilwins has been a popular destination for sweet treats, including hand-made ice cream and high-quality chocolates. Its Lakewood Ranch location will feature modern décor designed exclusively for the village.
Waterside Place will serve as the heart of Waterside, Lakewood Ranch’s newest village, which is situated around seven pristine lakes with 20 miles of shoreline and acres of nature preserve. When complete, it will feature more than 5,000 homes in up to 12 neighborhoods.
