  • New restaurant focused on ‘upscale comfort foods with a twist’ to open in Lakewood Ranch

The gastropub will feature ownership that’s also operated multiple New York City restaurants.

    Sarasota Herald-Tribune

A new gastropub, with ownership that’s operated other restaurants in New York City, plans to soon debut in Lakewood Ranch’s Sarasota County development Waterside Place.

Allswell hopes to open by September, said co-owner Tory Delany. Allswell’s owners have also operated New York City eateries such as The Malt House, a tavern with two Manhattan locations, and Southern California-style Mexican restaurant/mezcal and tequila bar Mezcali, also in Manhattan.

Delany, who moved to Lakewood Ranch in 2022, felt with all the fellow newcomers to the area that there was a market for the type of restaurants as those ones in New York City, which she described as “high-energy” with “excellent service, top-quality food.”

“Not to say that we didn’t experience that down here, but that we saw with such a rapidly growing community that there was room for many other restaurants and bars to open here to accommodate all of the new residents of Lakewood Ranch and the surrounding areas,” Delany said.

Delany described the intended ambience of Allswell as a “pub setting that serves high-quality food and high-quality drinks, with the focus being on upscale comfort foods with a twist.” Some potential menu item examples she gave included duck shepherd’s pie, bone-in beef rib with black garlic barbecue, cod fish and chips with English pea puree and malt vinegar aioli, short rib grilled cheese, burrata and stone fruit salad, pork belly sliders, Dungeness crab queso, and BFG (baked, fried, grilled) wings.

Allswell will also be full-liquor and offer handcrafted cocktails, a craft beer selection incorporating local breweries, and wine. Delany said the restaurant space will seat around 150 people: about 70 indoors and about 80 outdoors, with a wraparound terrace that will include a private terrace garden for birthday parties, baby showers and other events.

The gastropub will join a list of Waterside Place dining and drinking destinations that also includes the already open Osteria 500Good Liquid Brewing Co.Korê Steakhouse and Forked at Waterside. Other upcoming openings include Deep Lagoon Seafood & Oyster House, Mexican restaurant and tequila bar Agave Bandido, sushi bar and Japanese kitchen Dear Fish.

Allswell will be at 7500 Island Cove Terrace, Suite 102, Lakewood Ranch, and plans to be open daily starting at 11 a.m., with brunch on weekends and holidays and later closing hours on weekends as well.

Ticket Editor: Sarasota’s best new waterfront restaurant serves fabulous Italian food

The best new waterfront restaurant in Sarasota and Bradenton is this place serving amazing Italian cuisine.

    Wade Tatangelo

    Sarasota Herald-Tribune

We’re approximately a dozen miles east of Sarasota’s best waterfront restaurants and significantly farther from my favorite dining spots along Bradenton Riverwalk, or the renowned eateries by the famously beautiful beaches of Siesta KeyVenice and Anna Maria Island.

There are no natural beaches nearby, and I suspect that many of the ponds and lakes are man-made, but we are situated beside a substantial body of water. And while I’m more accustomed to searching for lazily floating manatees or frolicking dolphins, I’ve come to the edge of the elevated patio to gaze down over the rail at a swiftly moving alligator, which appears large enough to view me as a potential snack.

Such are the sights on the shores of Kingfisher Lake in the upscale new Waterside Place neighborhood of Lakewood Ranch. Waterside Place is where Old Florida meets New Florida, where ancient reptile predators swim in waters surrounded by bougie condos, shops, and restaurants. It’s also where you will find one of the best new restaurants to open this year in Sarasota or Manatee counties.

New restaurant Osteria 500 is in Lakewood Ranch’s bougie new waterfront neighborhood Waterside Place

I spotted the alligator during a recent weekday dinner at Osteria 500, following an equally rewarding lunchtime visit a few days prior. The restaurant is the newest addition to Waterside Place, a brand-new neighborhood that is already home to dining and drinking establishments such as Kore SteakhouseGood Liquid Brewing Co., and Forked. Additionally, a Deep Lagoon Seafood and Oyster House location as well as the Mexican-American restaurant Agave Bandido are set to open there. Yes, I will be returning to Waterside Place.

Osteria 500 opened this summer with plenty of well-deserved hype. Its proprietors include Giuseppe Del Sole, who also owns Napulè, the acclaimed Italian restaurant on South Tamiami Trail in Sarasota, which earned a coveted Golden Spoon award from Florida Trend magazine. I arrived at Osteria 500 for the first time on a recent Saturday afternoon with high hopes.

You enter Osteria 500 from Waterside Place’s main Lakefront Drive and are immediately enveloped by the cozy ambiance of brick and wood, complete with a long bar and mezzanine seating above. Follow the hostess to the covered patio seating overlooking Kingfisher Lake, as I did recently, and make sure to first pause and gaze at the gelato stand, the pastry display case, and the open kitchen featuring a wood-burning oven built atop a Fiat 500. Once outside, you’ll see the lake, hear its fountain, and notice Osteria 500’s outdoor bar, which is constructed from a vintage truck painted powder blue and adorned with marquee lights that spell out the venue’s name.

While the Disney World-esque Waterside Place is not exactly where you would expect to find one of the region’s most authentic Italian restaurants, that’s precisely what you get at Osteria 500. For instance, on Saturday, our Italian server presented us with the Italian water we ordered before guiding us to a couple of Italian beers as we perused the menu of Italian dishes (written in Italian with English descriptions). The restaurant also boasts an impressive Italian wine list and a cocktail menu featuring various Italian liquors and liqueurs. Even the background music featured Italian singers, and not just the usual Frank Sinatra or Dean Martin recordings; these singers were performing in Italian, albeit often delivering covers of classic American pop tunes.

Lakewood Ranch Farmers’ Market Named No. 1 in Florida

The Farmers’ Market at Lakewood Ranch was recently named No. 1 in Florida as part of the 15th annual America’s Farmers Market Celebration (AFMC), sponsored by the American Farmland Trust and the Farmers Market Coalition. The event ran from June 19 to Sept. 18, during which the public voted on their favorite markets. The Market was also ranked 22nd in the nation. The AFMC is the only annual ranking of the top farmers markets in the U.S. as voted on by the public.

The Farmers’ Market at Lakewood Ranch, which is about to enter its sixth season, is home to more than 100 curated vendors of the region’s best food and flavors, and is located at Waterside Place – Lakewood Ranch’s newest town center. Open on Sundays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. year-round, The Market has become a favorite weekly tradition for people from all over the region seeking farm-fresh produce, prepared foods, and specialty items and gifts.

Other activities on Market Sundays include yoga at 9 a.m. at the adjacent Waterside Park, weekly live music, Kids’ Corner crafts, games, and storytelling; and a Community Supported Agriculture program each fall and winter in partnership with Honeyside Farms.

The Market also works with Transition Sarasota as part of the Suncoast Gleaning Project. Among other efforts, volunteers pick up leftover vegetables from the farmers weekly and take them to food banks to make meals for those in need, thereby helping diminish food waste while providing nutritious produce to diverse populations.

Lakewood Ranch’s Waterside Place Adds Two New Tenants; Announces New Openings

Lakewood Ranch, the nation’s best-selling master-planned community for all ages, recently announced two new tenants for the Waterside Place town center – a retail, services, dining, and entertainment destination. Both are scheduled to open in the first quarter of next year.

Eatalia will be an Italian market that will specialize in imported meats, cheeses, olives and nuts, homemade bread, build-your-own charcuterie boards, fresh pasta and other grocery items, as well as a cold bar with various salad items. Eatalia will be for people who are “passionate about Italian cuisine, or anyone looking for a quick, quality- made bite on the go.”

The Wellness Space will offer an array of services, including mentoring and meditation with different modalities to create clarity. There will also be private and group coaching services for individuals, couples, family and children, as well as corporate services.

The newest dining spot at Waterside Place is Osteria 500, which opened at the end of July. Osteria 500 is an Italian restaurant featuring antipasto, salads, meat and fish entrees, and pasta dishes made fresh and in house. There are also numerous pizzas and paninis from which to choose. Osteria 500 has an extensive wine list, as well as specialty cocktails.

Other recently opened businesses include SHACK yoga + Fitness, Marmalade, featuring home décor, furnishings, and women’s apparel and gifts; Modish Salon, Capstan Financial Consulting Group, and Williams Parker Attorneys at Law. These recently opened businesses at Waterside Place join tenants Korê Steakhouse and cocktail lounge, Good Liquid Brewing company, O&A Coffee Supply, CROP Juice, Bay Area Aesthetics, Body Bar Pilates, 3Form Fitness, Kilwins, Paint Nail Bar, Lakewood Ranch Medical Group, Smith Law, Man Cave for Men, a luxury modern barber shop; Monkee’s, an upscale women’s boutique; Florida Provisions Co., a retail and bar concept; Forked, a breakfast, lunch, brunch and cocktails establishment; the John Cannon Model Experience Center, M/I Homes Design, M/I Homes Financial, and M/I Homes Title Agency.

Still to open are Agave Bandido, a Mexican-American restaurant and tequileria; Deep Lagoon, a seafood & oyster house; Good Liquid Distilling Co., Duck Donuts, Cileone Jewelers, The Black Dog store, which will sell resort wear, and La Chic Boheme, offering spa services and treatments.

“Waterside Place is rapidly becoming a retail and dining destination with the recent openings we have had,” said Kirk Boylston, president of Lakewood Ranch Commercial. “We have gathered the best of the best in local and regional retailers and restauranteurs into a truly unique setting. There is a tremendous amount of waterfront dining, and community spaces for sitting and relaxing, whether you’re having a drink from one of our restaurants, working remotely, or just hanging out with family and friends. It is rewarding to all involved with this project to see all of the spaces activated and used for the many purposes that we were trying to accommodate. A number of additional openings will occur during September and October; the majority of the tenants will be open for business by year’s end.

“Our events continue to have a robust following and are continually fine-tuned and enhanced by our great events and marketing team,” Boylston said.

Recently named the “Best Lifestyle Program in the U.S.” by the National Association of Homebuilders, Waterside Place is already active with festivals, music, and sporting activities. It is home to the Farmers’ Market at Lakewood Ranch, with more than 100 vendors offering organic produce, baked goods, pet products, and prepared food, etc. Ranch Nite Wednesdays, “your favorite weeknight hangout,” runs every Wednesday October through May, and features food trucks, live music from local artists, a weekly night market, and the second largest cornhole league in the nation, hosted by MVP Sports & Social. There is also live music on the plaza Friday and Saturday nights, and Waterside Place is home to the new “Sights and Sounds at Waterside Place” music and arts series.
